Writer’s bio

R achel is first and foremost a mother and wife who has spent the better part of 30 odd years living on the Adelaide Plains. After enduring the devastating ‘Pinery Bushfire’ in November 2015, Rachel appeared on Channel 9’s reality documentary This Time Next Year alongside her husband David. Their aim was to highlight the struggles that come with enduring total loss and the road to rebuilding and as a voice for those that have suffered loss as a result of natural disaster. Rachel hopes to one day be able to aid in after-disaster-recoveries by helping other families like her own. Rachel is an avid campaigner for mental health and hopes that open and honest discussions will reduce the stigma often attached. Rachel enjoys good food, good wine and good people.

T he 25th November 2015 was unlike any other day on the Adelaide Plains. That is until a fire broke out in Pinery, a town located about 70 kilometres north of Adelaide in South Australia’s Lower Mid North area. The fire burned more than 82,000 hectares (210,000 and more acres) of farming/cropping land and scrub, with much of the fire being over in a matter of hours. Two people lost their lives, several more were critically injured. Tens of thousands of livestock perished in the fire as well as multitudes of farming machinery that was also consumed. 400 or more farm structures were destroyed, and 91 homes were also taken. The area was devastated by the loss that had occurred in a few short hours. My family was directly impacted by the fire and this is our journey from the ashes of our Eden.
